Baccarat Side Bets, Countability, and the AI Arms Race

Baccarat side bets have become an important part of the conversation about casino analytics. Recent coverage in Inside Asian Gaming and GGRAsia looks at our work at Differential Labs and a question with implications for both table games and surveillance: what happens when players use better data to identify an advantage?

Why countability matters

Countability is about whether information on the cards already dealt can help estimate the value of a bet as the shoe changes. For a side bet, the relevant question is whether the remaining card composition creates a favorable opportunity under that game's rules and payout schedule.

Inside Asian Gaming reported on Differential Labs' analysis of AI-assisted advantage play on baccarat side bets. One issue is the ability to evaluate several bets together and move between them as opportunities change. That makes the operator's task broader than monitoring a single bet in isolation. The operator has data, too

In my interview with GGRAsia, I discussed how smart-table data can help operators compare a side bet's changing mathematical advantage with actual wagering behavior. The useful signals include when someone starts betting, how their wager changes, and whether their activity repeatedly aligns with favorable conditions. I also discussed chip attribution and the potential to reconstruct a shoe more quickly for an investigation. Read the GGRAsia interview.

From a signal to an investigation

The practical question is what surveillance and table-games teams can do with that information while a player is still at the table. A useful analytical signal needs context, an explanation, and a clear path for staff to investigate. That is where advantage-play safeguarding and operator-facing interpretation of model outputs come together.

Both articles explore the same tension: increasingly capable analytics are available to players and operators. For the casino, the opportunity is to turn its own detailed records into timely, interpretable decisions.
